I imagine interior space coexisting with outer space, where I build environments in miniature. These spaces exist both as inside and outside, where there is no specific time or place. Structures come out of walls, inanimate objects are brought to life, the corners of a room become a Lovecraftian portal, the very seems of a space unravel. These ideas led me to consider Gaston Bachelard's "Poetics of Space." He states that people crave spaces that inspire them to daydream; I crave a space that inspires the cosmic.
Working primarily in collage and drawing, my process begins by foraging through magazines and books about natural forms, patterns, topography and interior architecture. I xerox these images, reconfiguring them, sometimes drawing on them, to create images that reflect these aforementioned spaces. My drawings, influenced by the dust and cloud-like formations of nebulae, integrate the collage process but are more about mood and atmosphere and less about structure.
